The core concept of Pilates is strengthening of the “core” — the central muscle groups of the abdomen, back, and pelvis. Pilates is a form of exercise that’s for everyone — men and women, professional athletes and everyday people, young or old, fit or returning to fitness. Like many other kinds of exercise, Pilates increases metabolism, promotes respiratory and circulatory function, and improves bone density and muscle tone. And like yoga and martial arts, it can help you to focus and calm your nervous system.
Bodywork techniques aim to assess or improve posture, promote awareness of the “mind-body connection”, or manipulate a putative “energy field” surrounding the human body and affecting health. The better known forms of manipulative bodywork include various massage techniques from Swedish to deep tissue to neuromuscular therapy, Structural Integration, Alexander technique, Trager approach, Rolfing, Shiatsu, Feldenkrais method, Cranial therapy, Bowen technique, and Somatic Experiencing.
The techniques involved in movement education help release stress from the body and increase your normal range of motion and body awareness. Increasing one’s normal range of movement allows a person to experience more of a healthy, energetic, and creative balance in their body. Movement education is used as a therapy for muscle problems all over the body, and addressing certain types of pain, like bursitis, tendonitis, and carpal tunnel syndrome or other types of repetitive strain injury.
